Use IT Client Outcomes To Show Others How To Leverage Tech: An Allscripts Example

Learning to create patient-centered solutions and respect clinician needs should be central to your health IT solutions provider’s development goals. Unfortunately, it’s entirely too easy to roll from one successful project to the next without implementing the lessons and perspectives garnered in the process.

Heath IT Outcomes interviewed President of both International Allscripts and Sunrise Rich Berner during HIMSS15 who offered insight into how his organizations handle that challenge.

Being A Learning Organization

Berner stressed the importance of patients in the business of medical technology, but framed it around outcomes — a concept that is generally much easier for technology-centered people and organizations to work with.

He especially emphasized the fact that outcome-focused approaches also win over clinicians, who are also highly invested in outcomes and results on the clinical side.

To facilitate an outcomes-focused approach, Allscripts implemented its client outcomes collaboration program — a program in which they take the outcomes that a particular client has achieved and then package them into a form that is repeatable and can be rolled out to another client. This approach allows the second client to learn from peer-generated evidence to tackle their own problems.

Each client then hosts a webinar (which Allscripts facilitates on a monthly basis) and provides a “do it yourself guide” so that listeners are able to achieve the same outcomes themselves. He provided examples of the webinars to illustrate the breadth of knowledge that their program has created.

“So for example, in January, we did Bronx Lebanon who achieved a reduction in length of stay through better managing of their nutrition workflows. In February, we did the National Institute of Health where they achieved better efficacy with pharmacogenetics with the administration of Plavix as well as a reduction in hypersensitivity of allergic reactions to allopurinol.”

Wooing The Clinician

Berner also announced some specific areas in which Allscripts is working to make clinician lives easier, especially around EHR use and adoption in a time of value-based care. IT solutions providers can also consider solutions that address clinician pain points by:
